EMDR at NuWebb Counseling

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is utilized by NuWebb Counseling to help clients overcome trauma.

NuWebb Counseling will work one on one with you to understand your unique needs and decide if EMDR is right for you.

What Is EMDR?

EMDR is a therapy model that has been proven to be highly effective when treating clients with a history of trauma. This technique was developed by Francine Shapiro during the mid 1980’s. The premise is the mind can heal itself naturally, the same way our physical body does. Much of this natural healing occurs during the rapid eye movement (REM) phase of sleep.

The basis of EMDR is that emotions are also tied to our physical (somatic) state. EMDR uses what is commonly referred to as bilateral stimulation, where a therapist will guide the client through either eye movements, tapping, or tones to reprocess a memory that has been incorrectly stored to a more functional part of the brain.

When someone experiences a traumatic event, the brain stores these memories incorrectly, which can cause the memory to feel very real and disturbing in the present. Related or unrelated triggers can cause a person to feel like the trauma is happening all over again because the brain does not recognize the difference between the past and the present.

EMDR corrects this mis-storage of information so that the disturbing memories no longer cause disruption in daily life. The client can then react to the stimuli in the present without the past interfering. Just imagine that memories are like books on the bookshelf of our brain. Some books are at the front of the shelf and we keep reading them over and over. EMDR helps to reorganize the shelf so that the memories aren’t at the front of the shelf anymore. We can still have access to the memories if we need to, but we don’t have to see them every time we look at the shelf.
