What Is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, otherwise known as DBT, is an evidenced based psychotherapy that was originally developed to treat those with personality disorders to better manage intense emotions and navigate interpersonal relationships. It has also been useful treating those with mood disorders and suicidal ideation. The focus of this therapy is on skills training: mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness and distress tolerance. DBT focuses on skills to address emotional dysregulation and also educates the client about how this can feed into ineffective behavioral patterns. DBT acknowledges the need for change through the acceptance of situations while also understanding that although feelings are always changing, we do not have to get caught up in them.
